Inglewood Considering Protecting Inglewood Tenants with Short Term Rental Ordinance
The City of Inglewood, which already protects tenants through the Inglewood Rent Ordinance & Rent Control laws, is considering an ordinance establishing Short Term Rental regulations. With an anticipated increase in short-term rentals once developers complete widespread development occurring throughout the city, Inglewood seeks to preserve its affordable housing stock and curtail the rapid conversion of rental housing into short term rentals.
Several California cities have already protected tenants and preserve affordable rental options by enacting short term rental ordinances, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Oakland. Short term rental regulation is necessary as AirBNB, and similar platforms, wreak havoc on local communities throughout the state. One study found that short term rental platforms reduced New York City’s housing available housing stock by 10%. If passed, the Inglewood Short Term Rental ordinance will benefit Inglewood tenants by maintaining the city’s stock of affordable rental housing.
To date, the City of Inglewood has not publicly revealed what a proposed short term rental ordinance could be structured. The Inglewood Economic & Community Development Department, which heads the effort expects to release proposals shortly.
Meanwhile, many Inglewood tenants continue to be protected by the Inglewood Rent Ordinance, which limits permissible rent increases to a maximum of 3% in twelve-months.
